Jewish Wedding - Customs & Traditions
You want to create a ceremony that suits your religious and emotional needs. To help you infuse your ceremony with the Jewish touch, we have created a breakdown of the elements that make up a traditional Jewish wedding. Be sure to discuss these details with your wedding officiant and work together to create a ceremony you will remember for a lifetime.
Choose the date for a Jewish Wedding
The date of a wedding has special significance in Jewish life. Many chassidic Jews get married on special days marking the birth and the death of their great rabbis. Pay attention to certain times of the year, such as the Omer period (the time between the holidays of Passover and Shavuot) and the three weeks in the months of Tammuz and Av when weddings cannot be celebrated.
Select a rabbi to perform the wedding and a sofer (Jewish scribe) to write the Ketuba, or religious marriage contract.
Invite guests to your wedding. Have invitations printed by a company that deals mainly with Orthodox weddings. Once you receive news of who is coming, you can start to tell the kosher caterer the approximate number of guests.
Ufruf
The Sabbath before your ceremony it is customary to go to a service and receive an aliyah (going up to bless God for the reading of the Torah. Aliyah is Hebrew for "going up." Ufruf is Yiddish for the same thing). Some Mizrachi communities (Persia, etc.) hold the ufruf on the Shabbat following the Jewish wedding. Local congregations are very open to this. If you have been active in Hillel Shabbat services, then Hillel may have a special Shabbat morning service for you
Mikveh A Spiritual Preparation for Jewish Wedding.
Mazel tov: The Hebrew way to say "congratulations" or "good luck." After the groom breaks the glass at the Jewish Wedding, the guests call out, "Mazel tov!" -- which denotes the end of the solemnity and the beginning of the party.
Did you know? The Hebrew word for man is EISH, which is spelled Aleph - Yud - Shin.
The Hebrew word for woman is EISHA, which is spelled Aleph - Shin - Hay.
The letters Yud and Hay combine to form the Hebrew name for God.
Removing the letters Yud and Hay (God) from the words EISH and EISHA, leaves the letters Aleph and Shin. Aleph and Shin spell ESH, which is the word for fire.
