What is a Bat Mitzvah?
Bat mitzvah means "daughter of a commandment." bat mitzvah girl strives to come closer to God -- like a son and daughter to his or her parent. Bat mitzvahs is typically celebrated with a festive meal, with the family and friends of the bat mitzvah girl on hand to celebrate their entrance into adulthood.
According to Jewish law, when Jewish children reach the age of maturity (12 years for girls in Orthodox synagogues, though it is mainly also celebrated at 13) they become responsible for their actions. A girl is said to become Bat Mitzvah, or Bas Mitzvah (in Yiddish pronunciation).
